End of Day 4

Today was the easy day.  There were no big life changes or orphanages to visit--just a little sightseeing and getting to know Zeke. Here's what have we learned so far (and hopefully you'll observe for yourself soon):

Zeke is:
  • Silly
  • Excitable
  • Curious
  • Talkative
  • Persistent
  • Strong-willed
  • A communicator
  • A fast learner
  • A fast duck-walker (with short, wide feet)
  • Loud when he sleeps
Zeke likes:
  • His New Blue Ball
  • To Mimic
  • To Honk like a Goose
  • To See how things work
  • Paper airplanes
  • Looking outside
  • Bath time
Zeke dislikes:
  • Putting shoes on
  • Hats
Today we took Zeke to the city zoo.  It's a little different than any Zoo I've ever experienced.  For one, pandas are native to the area, so this zoo has eight of them.  Go big or go home, right?

Red Pandas - Yes, it's a thing

Kids on a field trip wanted to speak English with Molly & Justin

Pandas sit and eat bamboo nonstop.

T'ai Chi

Last spring one of the staff at the zoo left the tiger gate open in the morning while people were practicing tai chi nearby (just like in the pictures above).  No one was hurt, but animals had to be tranquilized and brought back to their homes

Rental boats

So many funny signs

Tofu.  Typically served in a spicy broth.

After the zoo, we stopped at a museum.

A bronze statue of the first king in the area.

A old/collectible coin as a keepsake Zeke

When Zeke was taking a nap, Justin and I went out for a walk, looking for a snack.  We had tried some out-of-the ordinary foods, but we were looking to take things to the next level.

Dim Sum: Not especially adventurous, but very good.  They are steamed dough balls with filling (in this case, pork).

On our hunt for a snack, we came across a store we still can't identify.  It was full of expensive, dried "items".  Maybe you can help.  What type of store would contain these items?

First, these look like bundles of dried caterpillars.

Not sure. Dried bugs wrapped in something?

Wow!

Looks like a sea creature.  On the right are dark sea horses.

These were next to trays of various mushrooms and fungi

Finally, we saw a wall of Ginseng.  This box was from Wisconsin and costs about $150.  If any of these items look interesting to you, let me know--I'll pick some up.

Hmm... still hungry.  This place looked promising.  Actually, it *sounded promising.  One of the gals running the storefront had a microphone and was calling for people to come over as they walked by.  They had had squid on a stick and other goodies we didn't recognize.  Maybe you can help us figure out what it was.

I love spicy foods, but this was a bad idea for a Scandinavian.  The top of my head was sweating.

Ice cream was the only cure.

We got back to find Molly dealing with a fussy baby, so Justin was on duty!  Zeke straightened up and wanted to play again.

The night ended with Molly and Justin trying to figure out if Zeke's bedtime crying was real or fake.  I know I'm not supposed to laugh, but I couldn't help it.

Tomorrow we head to Guangzhou where we'll work on the US side of the process.

Good night everyone!
