Hi Everyone!
Thank you for patience with updates. During Isla's hospital stay, I just could not take time to update with needing to focus on Isla at the hospital and in being just downright exhausted as we got to bring our precious girl home to recover. We love to share part of the journey to help bring awareness, to encourage others walking a similar journey, and we could not be more thankful for all the prayers and support for our warrior girl!
We breathed a sigh of relief when Isla came out of surgery on February 26th and her surgeon shared with us his great relief that surgery was successful. We could not be more grateful that he was able to cut through Isla's intensely thick fusion plate in five different areas and he was able to stretch those areas enough to place a larger VEPTR rod in to try to hold her ribcage open. We praise God that surgery went well and we pray for a miracle of her lung tissue to grow and be able to support her body as it grows! These surgeries are saving her life...this is truly something to celebrate and we do not take for granted that Isla's past 6 surgeries and this first VEPTR revision surgery were successful.
Isla started out her recovery in the PICU after surgery. I had shared in our last update that Isla's breathing dropped drastically at the end of surgery. She needed more oxygen support than usual and they needed to reverse some of her pain medication, coming out of anesthesia, in order to try to improve her breathing. Pain management, oxygen/breathing, and Isla's high heart rate were our main focuses those first few days after surgery. Isla had some atelectasis of both her lungs and some fluid in the left lung (the same side as her surgery). It was quite the constant struggle. Isla was SO swollen and struggling. There was a fine line of helping her breathing and giving pain meds for her pain. We were doing Chest PT multiple times a day to try to break up any fluid in her lung. Soon into recovery, after surgery, we realized that Isla had experienced an ileus of her GI system and urinary tract. Anesthesia and pain meds created the perfect storm that caused it. Not everyone faces this with surgery, yet it is not uncommon either. Isla felt completely MISERABLE from this. It was very stressful to try to figure out how to help her and J and I felt so heartbroken that nothing was helping Isla for days. They had to do countless treatments and procedures over the week that were really traumatizing for our sweet girl. It was extremely difficult on Isla and we have already been discussing with her surgeon and team, protocol and details about how to try to help this the next time she has surgery. Isla did improve enough to move from the PICU and move into her hospital room on the surgical floor (right by her Ortho team!) after 3 nights. Isla had one JP drain from her surgery and a "wound vac" - these both were removed on recovery day 6. We were so grateful that Isla's incision looked well and the VEPTR side of recovery was progressing well. (This was our greatest concern! Little did we know she would face other obstacles in recovery). Another issue Isla faced was aspiration with liquids. During Isla's second VEPTR surgery, she had had a vocal cord paralysis injury. Over the years she has been slowly improving from this injury and had great help from her OT that had training for feeding therapy. Sadly, it seems Isla faced a regression of this injury during this surgery. Isla has torticollis of her neck that is due to fusion of her cervical vertebrae. Due to this angle of her neck, intubation can be difficult and during surgery, the tube from intubation presses on her left vocal cord. During Isla's hospital stay we witnessed her having small aspirations soon after surgery and they were increasing as she was switched from IV meds to liquid meds orally and with trying to eat or drink. She ended up having a couple of scary events by the end of the week that proved the vocal cord injury was having issues again. It was really scary, the nurses and NPs were so great to quickly step in and we praise God x-rays showed our girls lungs were ok.
Isla was taken off all oral liquid meds and we evaluated her needs. Our sweet girl was so sad and felt so defeated. We felt both a great thankfulness that her surgery was successful and she was doing well with the VEPTR side of things in recovery but we were so sad at all the other issues she was fighting through...
Isla was slowly improving yet her GI system and urinary tract were not. We were astounded by her determination to keep moving forward. She wanted to walk around her hospital floor and she loved going for wagon rides. Isla participated in PT and a bit of OT as well. She always surprises PT with her drive. Once she decides to do anything...watch her go! Her days were filled with up and down moments. We would counteract the hard things in each day for Isla, with reading books, playing with toys, wagon rides, walks, and watching Thomas and Friends (her new fav). Bless her heart...even through the toughest moments she would find a way to smile.
We were so very thankful for Isla's surgical team - Dr. Anari and the AMAZING nurses that helped her through her 9 nights/10 days in the hospital.
On about recovery day/night 9, Isla's systems started to function - que the Celebration song here!
We were not just relieved that her systems were starting to respond. But, also so thankful that she didn't have to go through all the countless traumatic procedures and treatments. Huge sigh of relief!
Once her systems could prove to be working again, Isla was able to be discharged and we brought out sweet girl to our hotel for a couple of days. We continued to watch her closely and once we knew she was fully on the up & up, we booked our flights home.
We said "good bye, 'til next time" to Philadelphia on Tuesday March 9 and after a long day of travel, Isla was sooooo happy to walk into her home sweet home and see her brother! We all were so thankful to get Isla home and to all be together again.
Isla is doing well here at home. She has pain that is up and down. She loves to be playing and we can see when she is having a harder moments and needs some rest. We already have appointments on the books to check in with her doctors and therapists. One day and step at a time...we keep going!
We want to say a deep and heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone that was praying...
We felt those prayers and we saw answers to those prayers. We feel so very supported by you all.
We'd love continued prayer for Isla as she continues to heal - praying for no infection in her VEPTR surgery healing and for her as she moves ahead in healing her vocal cord as well.
Please pray for Justin. This Friday (March 19), he has to have an oral surgery to remove an impacted wisdom tooth and cyst underneath it.
Zeke will be meeting with his medical team over the next two weeks to prep for his next surgery (we are not sure of the date of surgery yet)
My health (molly) is still a struggle...would love prayer for endurance through fatigue and pain.
in all things, we give thanks for all God has done...He is faithful!

We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. 21In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. 22May your unfailing love be with us, LORD, even as we put our hope in you. Psalm 33:20-22
You two are so thoughtful to give this tremendous update. Praise God for his faithfulness. J I can not imagine your pain but soon it will feel better. Let your family care for you please. M always praying for strength.
